Therapy is such an awesome way to vent and meet someone who wants to hear what you have to say. Yes, I know they are paid to listen; but in my experience they are very helpful. I can honestly say that I Love My Therapist! She is a wonderful woman who not only meets with me for therapy weekly, but also has me call her often to stay in contact. It’s nice to have someone who makes themselves available for you like that when you really just need a friend.
I haven’t always had an amazing therapist. I started out with some that were plain awful and others that were really nice, just not for me. It wasn’t until one night when I had to go to the ER because my suicidal thoughts were so bad that I was provided with a therapist. He was nice I just wasn’t very comfortable talking to him. That was okay though, because he happened to be the head of a local mental health center. He decided after listening to me, that my current therapist would be the best fit. He was right…
Ever since the first session, she has been on “Team Jade”. Do you know how refreshing it is to have someone rooting for you every step of the way? With the proper therapist you can and will. They can make you feel worthy again. She is teaching me to love myself, or at least like myself.
Family can be, and should be very supporting role. However, the downfall is that they don’t always understand what’s going on with us. They are not trained to understand us in the way a therapist or doctor is. Try and give them a little break if they are trying. It’s not easy for them to see us going through so much pain, anxiety, anger and so on. All while they stand by powerless to help. If you can, try asking them to read up on your disorder; or even recommend that they get therapy on how to help you out.
I have been fortunate enough to have a few people that have stuck by my side the whole time. However, a lot of people who are suffering from these disorders don’t have the support that I do. I can’t speak for everyone with mental health disorders, or even all therapists. I would however say that my therapist has a beautiful soul, she builds me up when I really need it. I think it’s important to have someone to talk to; I confide in her like I do my husband. Since like I said above, my therapist is trained to understand me! Why not try it out? If you don’t like them you can always request a new one.
I have chosen to leave out the name of my therapist because of privacy reasons!
